Our Story -  Becoming an Accredited Dog Trainer in Longbridge

As an Accredited Dog Trainer in Longbridge, my goal is simple: to help dogs and their owners build a calm, confident, and lifelong relationship based on trust. Woofology was founded on the belief that dog training should be ethical, science-based, and focused on understanding the dog rather than controlling it.

My work today combines professional training, behavioural science, and real-world experience working with dogs and their owners across Longbridge, the wider Birmingham area and online. But the story of Woofology didn’t start in a classroom or training centre — it started with one rescue dog who completely changed my life.

Where It All Began

I have loved dogs my whole life: I was that kid who constantly nagged his parents for a puppy and never got one. When the time finally came for me to get a dog, I fell in love with a rescue dog from Spain. His name is Elio, and he has changed my life.

I knew from the moment I first saw him that rehabilitating Elio was going to be extremely challenging. He was terrified of people, noises and cars and would tremble with anxiety and shut down in stressful situations. It took painstaking months of training, using play and positive reinforcement to get him to be the happy, sociable dog he now is (you can see his progress here), and for me to realise that I had a gift and a passion for dog training – this is how Woofology began.

Since then, I have been studying with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers - the leading education provider for dog trainers in the UK, which teaches force-free training techniques backed by the latest canine behavioural science.

Training, Qualifications & Professional Development

To ensure every client receives the highest standard of training, I committed myself to studying with some of the most respected educators in the dog training industry.

I am an accredited member of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) — the UK’s leading education provider for ethical dog trainers. The IMDT promotes science-based, force-free training methods and is a founding member of the UK Dog Training and Behaviour Charter, which sets ethical standards for trainers across the country.

As part of my professional development, I have also trained directly with Steve Mann, the founder of the IMDT and author of the best-selling dog training book Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy. This course deepened my understanding of learning theory, positive reinforcement, and how to build reliable behaviour without intimidation or punishment.

Alongside this, I hold a Level 3 qualification in Canine Behaviour, allowing me to work confidently with both everyday training challenges and complex behavioural cases.

But qualifications are only part of the story. The real learning comes from working with dogs and owners every single day.

Why I Only Use Positive Reinforcement

My experience with dogs has led me to conclude that positive reinforcement training is the only effective and humane way to train an animal. It is at the heart of everything I do. I don’t use aversive tools or punishment-based techniques such as lead corrections, spray deterrents, or shock collars. These outdated methods may suppress behaviour temporarily, but they don’t build confidence or trust.

Instead, my goal is to help dogs feel calm, confident, and able to cope with the world around them — while teaching owners the skills they need to guide their dog successfully.

I don’t use any of the aversive techniques employed by so-called ‘balanced’ trainers, whose training methods are rooted in outdated research.

If you’ve had bad experiences with other dog trainers who advised you to yank on your dog’s lead, spray them with compressed air, to use a shock collar or worse, then you’ve come to the right place.

 My Training Philosophy

Very early on in my journey as a dog trainer, I realised that dog training is rarely just about training the dog.

Most of the time, my job is actually about helping owners understand their dog — how they learn, what motivates them, and how their environment shapes their behaviour. When owners understand these things, everything becomes easier.

That’s why my approach focuses on the whole dog, not just the behaviour we see on the surface. When I work with a dog, I look at several key factors that influence behaviour, including past learning experiences, emotional state, diet and nutrition, and even potential physical discomfort or health issues.

Often, behaviour that appears “aggressive” is actually fear or anxiety, and addressing the root cause is the only way to create lasting change.

This philosophy underpins all of the training I offer at Woofology, whether that’s puppy training, 1-to-1 dog training, or group classes designed to help dogs develop real-life skills and confidence.

Building Confident Dogs for Life

I want to train you to become an effective leader for your dog, using only positive reinforcement so the two of you can enjoy a happy and rewarding relationship.

Whether you are raising a puppy, helping a rescue dog settle in, or working through behavioural challenges, the goal is always the same:

A calm, confident dog who can thrive in the human world.

That’s the philosophy behind Woofology - and it’s something I care deeply about.
